Rear Facing Safety Seats for Infants

Rear Facing Safety Seats for Infants

Sean Elwell, RN, Injury Prevention Coordinator at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont  Hospital for Children, shows you how to safely install and use a child's rear facing car  seat.
A few important things to remember:
Children from birth through their first year and at least 20 pounds should ride in rear facing safety seats.
Harness should be tight. Perform the pinch test to be sure. You should not be able to pinch more than an inch of strap.
Retainer clip should sit at armpit level.
Use vehicle anchors or seat belt to secure child safety seat.
There should be no more than one inch of movement side to side or forward.
For best protection, keep children in the back seat as long as possible.
Always check your child seat instruction manual or vehicle owner's manual for the exact details for your situation.
